Escape from Witchwood Hollow review

Synopsis:

Everyone in Arnn - a small farming town with more legends than residents - knows the story of Witchwood Hollow: if you venture into the whispering forest, the witch will trap your soul among the shadowed trees.

After losing her parents in a horrific terrorist attack on the Twin Towers, fifteen-year-old Honoria and her older brother escape New York City to Arnn. In the lure of that perpetual darkness, Honoria finds hope, when she should be afraid.

Perhaps the witch can reunite her with her lost parents. Awakening the witch, however, brings more than salvation from mourning, for Honoria discovers a past of missing children and broken promises.

To save the citizens of Arnn from becoming the witch’s next victims, she must find the truth behind the woman’s madness.

How deep into Witchwood Hollow does Honoria dare venture?

Review:

This book is a story within a story, within a story, and more. Reading the synopsis, I was intrigued. After reading the book, it was so much more than the description.
The book begins in presence tense. Honoria is just making due with the place she lives. Not by choice of course. She is curious with the story about the witch. However now it is in question of how much she wants to be involved.
Not only do you read about her, but of many other characters. All of them are different living in different eras. Except they are all in one place. You get a story of how they made it to the same place, the Witch's forest.

I do have to say that the book kept me interested till the end. Jordan Elizabeth put a lot of thought into this and it shows. Personally I would have never thought of merging so many stories into one book with the same ending. The book was memorable. In my book life, that is huge. A unique story with a interesting title.

I rate the book a 4.4. Worth your time.

Black Water Tales: The Unwanted by Jean Nicole Rivers

Title: The Unwanted
Series: Black Water Tales
Format: ebook and paperback
Genre: Thriller/horror
Length: 306
Review formants: ebook and paperback
Previously Published Titles: Black Water Tales: The Secret Keepers (2012)

Blurb:

In the remote, eastern European town of Borslav there is St. Sebastian orphanage, a place where people discard their unwanted children. For the American, Blaire Baker, it’s the perfect place to volunteer her services. Paired with a cheerful volunteer nurse, Blaire is enthusiastic about the possibilities, but is quickly discouraged when she encounters the nefarious nature of the staff and the deplorable conditions of the facility and the children.

Upon arrival, one of the children informs Blaire, "There’s something in the basement." It isn’t long before strange things begin happening, including Blaire’s flashbacks of the accident that killed her parents. The children soon suffer injuries that Blaire, first, fears may be the deeds of the callous workers but she soon thinks the abuse may originate from a source that is less than human, something unwanted.

The unwanted is coming but in order for Blaire to fight it, she must dig into St. Sebastian and herself in search of truth. Blaire wants nothing more than to help the children, but when she discovers the tragedy that happened in the basement and learns that the same evil forces are still at work, it will be Blaire who needs help…There’s something in the basement.

Excerpt 1:

That fall was one of the coldest Black Water had ever seen. Blaire could not have been more than eleven years old. Sabrina Langford had asked her if she wanted to go walking up to the Grammercy Bridge. Grammercy had once taken trains safely from one side of the river to the other and on through the picturesque town of Black Water, but that was long ago. It was a place of little interest to two young girls and, from what Blaire had known at her innocent age, it was, at most, a place where the older kids went to kiss on Friday nights. When Sabrina suggested it as a play place that day, Blaire wanted to object, but hesitated at the thought of turning off her newfound friend.

Long ago the bridge had become lifeless, but it still gave an endless series of death breaths as the girls walked along it. The water flowed rapidly, and the sound of the swishing and churning made Blaire shiver. After throwing a couple of rocks into the river, a series of familiar faces emerged. Lacey Wright, Sharla Hig, Kiana James, and Elizabeth Morrow claimed territory on the bridge, creating a poignant image that Blaire would never forget. A pang of fear sliced through Blaire’s stomach: seppuku. Nothing involving Lacey, Sharla, Kiana and Elizabeth could be good for her because the Frightening Four were perpetrators of horrendous kiddie crimes. Just the week before they surrounded a girl on the playground, who they teased relentlessly until she cried and admitted she was a "slut" as they kept calling her. It was a word that Blaire knew vaguely from hearing it in R-rated movies that she snuck to catch glimpses of from time to time, although she would have been hard pressed to define the word if asked. Against her better judgment, Blaire stepped into the circle of doom on the playground and screamed at all of them to leave the helpless girl alone. Within seconds of hearing the commotion, Mrs. Bennett, infiltrated the mob of minors with a series of inquiries and instructions that made Lacey roll her eyes. The kids scattered but not before Blaire received a malevolent glare from the hellion gang’s little hierarch. The four of them were relentlessly brutal BFFs, who stopped at nothing when they

craved the blood of another in the form of utter humiliation and in the name of pure adolescent wickedness.

BLURB:
I make my living as a hustler, and I’m great at it.
I don’t have a single tell and use that to my advantage to manipulate any situation.
I’ve always known what a person is about to do before they’ve even decided.

That is, until I met Nell.
I can’t get a read on her, and what’s worse, she doesn’t want anything to do with me.
Which only makes me want her more.

Now I’m in for the hardest hustle of my life.
Somehow I have to convince Nell that she belongs with me.
Good thing I’m always up for a challenge.

EXCERPT:
Current score is…

Nell: 1

Ass-face: 0

God, I love winning.

That is, until the dickhead opens his mouth again. “Oh, Miss Prescott, I forgot to tell you, I love your taste in underwear.” The wine I’d just sipped suddenly goes flying across the table, right onto Nick’s shirt.

“Oh, shit!” I shout, garnering unwanted attention from the people around us as I leaned across the table and dab at the offending stain with my napkin. “I’m so sorry! I’ll pay for the dry cleaning.”

Nick clears his throat awkwardly. “He’s seen your underwear?”

“She looks fucking phenomenal in lace,” the bastard says. “And that thong…” he trails off with a moan, closing his eyes as he lifts his wine glass to his mouth and takes a sip.

“I feel like I’m missing something pretty serious here,” Nick mutters.

“Those damned uniform skirts,” I smile manically, still rubbing at the stain that seems to be growing larger. “Can’t bend over an inch without them showing everything.” I sit back in my chair and shoot Gavin a look that explains, in great detail, the way I’m planning to murder him. “Obviously, Mr. Saint lacks all gentlemanly decorum since he brought it up.”

Nick pushes his chair back and stands. I have a sudden wave of panic that he’s bailing on our date, leaving with his feelings hurt and me alone with Gavin. “Excuse me for just a minute,” he smiles politely. “I’m just going to go put some water on…this,” he waves at the front of his ruined shirt.”

“Oh. Oh! Yeah, sure!” I answer, relieved he’s not bailing on me, although I know I’d deserve it. Once he’s gone, I turn to Gavin. “You’re Satan, you know that?” I hiss. “Fucking Satan!”

“I’d say I just made your date more interesting, Miss Prescott.”

Current score…

Nell: 1

Prince of Darkness: 1

Darra's Review:
If you have not read Aiden's book, you should. Where it left off with Dilan and what happened made me say WTF! Kathy left me hanging. I knew I would be reading about Dilan in the next book. Too mysterious not to.
To say Dilan had baggage is an understatement. He lived the nightmare of going to prison for a crime he did not commit. His life has been a disaster mostly because of Carlos and his family. This book is about resolution. A need to finish what was started. To move forward with life without being worried someone was plotting to kill him.
I liked Anna from the beginning. Starting in Absolution of Aiden. It had to be hard to continue being emotionally involved to a guy who is no longer in her life. Until he shows up out of nowhere. I wanted to punch him in the face. He was a dick. But with a motive.
They could not help but be pulled to each other just like before. The problem is how to keep her out of danger and finish what was started. That part you will have to read.
Overall, he was not my favorite character out of all the guys. Am I bit biased because of Cain. Yep. I really was involved with Roan and Cain the most. Despite that, you have all of them involved in this book. They are a brotherhood pack.
I rate the book a 4.3.

Excerpt

“I know what the fuck is running through your mind, Dilan. Let it fucking go. You can blame yourself all you want, but this is the last time I’ll tell you that no one blames you for this. We’re all a little shocked. Stunned to the very fucking core over this shit. One thing you need to know, to hear from me, is this. I can honestly stand here and tell you that if I were you, I would be doing the same thing. Nothing would have stopped me, and I know with every goddamn bone in my body that you wouldn’t blame me for a damn bit of it. Pull your head out of your ass. Man the fuck up. I want every one of those women back.” I close my eyes and clip the bridge of my nose, exhaling as I do.

“Don’t stand there pitying yourself or any one of us, Dilan. We will get through this.” My uncle stands directly in front of me. His words are mixing with the ones Roan just spoke, stabbing me with a dull knife into my already wounded heart.

“One thing I hate is repeating myself. But it seems with you I have to. You’ve always carried this fucked-up world on your shoulders. Just like your cousin, you’re a fixer. Determined to do shit on your own in order to protect those you love. Well, goddamn it, sometimes in life we need to ask for help. Even though you didn’t, you sure as fuck are getting it. There are things in life that drive us to do things we do not want to do. I know first-hand how these things or people that drive a knife so deep into your gut, twisting the shit out of it until you’re damn near bleed dry, can possess your every thought. It damn near killed me to know Royal had a part in putting you away. Why he turned on all of us is irrelevant. He did. He broke the rules and so did the Carlos family. The situation with Royal has lead up to all of this. My guess is he was jealous of you, like he was of his own brother. He had his filthy hands mingling with Juan’s, to attack me where he knew it would hurt me the most. My family.” He pauses briefly then continues on, his words pulling me from my gloom of guilt.
