Sunny's Review of Speak of the Devil

I read the first book in this series this weekend. I started it at like 6AM on Saturday and was finished Saturday night. I would have been done before that because I could not put it down but I had plans. I thought about cancelling so that I could finish this book. It has been a while since I have been that into a book.

 

So the book starts out with Lily going to a party with her friends and they die. Lily ends up waking up and has to deal with the fact that she survived and they didn't. She moves to another town and ends up being friends with some interesting people. They have a lot of secrets and Lily tries to figure it all out. They help her heal a little bit from the loss of her friends.

 

I don't like saying too much in reviews but I was a little annoyed with Lily. Then I thought how would I act if I was the only survivor of a wreck? So then I was a lot more accepting of her. I can say I was not a fan of Mo from the beginning. Not really sure what it was at first but I didn't like him. Luc was a little bit better for me.

 



Seriously, go get this book and read it so that you can jump into the next book. I am really glad that don't have to wait very long get started on The Devil Made Me Do It. I am so ready to figure out how to go home "sick" from work today so I can read!!! I am giving the Speak of the Devil 4.5 stars out of 5!

Growing up with a junkie mother and nobody else, my neighbor, Brooklyn, had been my only happy place. I had taken care of her, and when I had left, I had to leave behind a huge part of me. I couldn't do it again. I needed her. Once again, she’s the only person I want in my life, but I wasn’t sure if it was for all the right reasons. 

Were there too many obstacles in the way?

Darra's Review:

 This story has more dynamic character than many other books I have read before. I did like the storyline more because of this. There is depth to the background of Nolan and Brooklyn that is a must to read to really understand why their relationship is so important. The book is not extremely long. However it took me more than a couple of days to read. Not because I was bored. Because I needed to read each flashback. They really have a strong relationship and it surprised me he never came back for her earlier.

I liked both of them. I get why Nolan was conflicted with his relationship with little B. Hard to see through the 12 year old you new before. The story is real. Not fluff. I was completely stressed at the end. But it would not be considered a great book if it does not inflict emotions within the readers.

 

I rate it a 4.4.

I really like this book. I am very glad that Stephanie Witter made this book realistic. I love that she did not make everything easy for the characters. Brooklyn and Nolan both had messed up childhoods and found brother and sister love as neighbors. Nolan was very much a big brother to Brooklyn. He watched out for her and was showing a maturity with her that teenage guys rarely have. Brooklyn worshipped Nolan. Her feelings of course turned from worship to crush as she started into her pre-teen years. After Nolan left those feelings did not change for Brooklyn. She constantly held Nolan on a pedestal and no other guy was ever going to compare.

 

I love that when Nolan came back and Brooklyn was now 18 and an adult he had a lot of problems dealing with wanting her and still seeing her as a kid. He fought the feelings and felt like they were wrong. I am really happy that it was not an easy transition for him. Brooklyn was awesome. She was not a whiny I need someone to be happy and take care of me girl. She worked hard and took care of herself. As you see the stuff that both characters have to overcome you fall a little bit more in love with each of them.

 

I am giving this book 4.2 stars out of 5. I like the writing and the characters. Go check it out!!!
